O'Neill Aged Care Facility

This project involved the total refurbishment of an existing aged care facility which operated in a building that was more than 60 years old. The construction required strong expertise to build within a site that had confined accessibility, restricted working hours and required considered planning and logistics.

 

This planning was required to ensure that care and accommodation was designed to allow family and friends that ability to create meaningful connection with their loved ones residing at the facility.

 

Project works comprised of internal demolition of walls, floors, ramps, etc. We were required to provide steel elements to maintain the structural integrity of the building whilst carrying out demolitions. This process was managed by BowdenCorp in discussions with the Client and Consultants.

 

The project involved the construction of individual rooms for patients and required special features such as the nurse call system, damp proof carpet underlay and special door closers which would aid older patients in opening doors.

 

The internal corridors were lined with timber, which require to be installed with zero tolerance for deviations from the measurements. A commercial kitchen was also provided along with industrial grade washing machines and dryers.

 

One of the biggest challenges was to make an old building like this comply with current BCA and DDA regulations, and we worked closely with the Client, Consultants and the Building Surveyor to achieve a result which met not only regulatory requirements, but the quality the Client expected from BowdenCorp.

 

This building, which is a Palliative Care facility, was eagerly awaited by the Client, Villa Maria Catholic Homes, as there is currently a need for such developments in Victoria.
